Mrs Garvey & Miss Pilkington.
In English this term, we are continuing to practise our reading and writing activities. We like to link our learning in literacy to a book and our first story is Jim and the Beanstalk. This is a traditional tale but with a difference - it's all about what happened next! The children will be comparing this version with the original and will be using their imaginations to write a description of a giant. Other stories such as The Queen's Handbag and A walk in London are also going to be read.
In Maths both years groups will still be doing lots of work on number and place value and recapping and building on our knowledge from the previous terms. We use lots of practical resources in our lessons to help us with our understanding and mental maths skills are very important too. Year two will be looking at length, position and direction, time and capacity and our Year 1 children will focus on multiplication and division, money, time and fractions. It will be a very busy term with hopefully lots of learning opportunities in our outdoor classroom.
We have a very exciting topic this term in Science. We are going to be learning all about plants. The children will take part in a variety of activities and tasks both indoors and outside. They will research the famous scientist Charles Darwin, label the different parts of a plant and most importantly find out what a plant needs to survive. We are looking forward to planting our own seeds and observing how they grow over time. Some of our plants might even survive!
History and Geography
Our History and Geography topics link very well together this term as we look forward to celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The children will look at the role of the monarchs in British history and understand the qualities needed to be a good monarch. They will look at other significant monarchs such as Elizabeth I, Charles I, Victoria and Elizabeth II and know their chronological order, placing them on a timeline.
In Geography the children will look at the four countries of the UK that Queen Elizabeth rules over. They will learn about England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and will compare the simple features of each country and it's capital city. The children will use a range of maps; country, street map, aerial views and plans to locate places and landmarks.
The children in Sycamore Tree love to be creative and to join in with musical activities. They are going to be learning how to draw a self portrait and to investigate the work of the local artist Andy Goldsworthy. In Design Technology the children will be learning key life skills on how to design and make a healthy food item for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee party. They will continue to follow the Charanga scheme of work in music.
After taking part in a very exciting PE lesson where we were taught how to play Quidditch, we are now going to spend the rest of the term developing these skills. Our other PE lesson will be focusing on Athletics for our Sports Day. This term our PE sessions are on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please come dressed in your PE kit.
